2018-19 Tournament 2: Ephrata, November 17

Speech and debate took ten students to Ephrata High School on November 17. Ten competitors put us just over the line into the “Large Team” category, where we took second, as well as a second place finish in speech events.

Individual finishes:

Linh Truong, 2nd Open Informative Speaking, 1sp Open Program Oral Interpretation, 1st Open Congressional Debate
Conner Mahaffey, 1st Novice Congress
Ali Pettey, 2nd Novice Congress, 2nd Novice Tall Tales, 1st Novice Editorial Commentary
Victor Soriano Top Presiding Officer, Novice Congressional Debate
Amy Walker 3rd Novice Editorial Commentary, 1st Novice Informative Speaking, 1st Novice Humorous Interpretation.

Linh Truong   Team Member since 2017   2018 National qualifier in Lincoln-Douglas Debate   Outstanding  Distinction rank  with National Speech and Debate Organization   Why did you join Speech and Debate?    It seemed like a great opportunity for another extracurricular activity and some of my friends did it (Baylee and Eric). I stayed because I love all the people and enjoy doing it.  What  is  your favorite Speech and Debate memory?    There are a few. I loved beating Q at the ninja game at Regionals. When I got 1st in Novice Impromptu it made me proud (and Baylee). I really loved getting to debate syrup sandwiches that one time. 2018-19 Tournament 1: Pasco, November 3

With only eight competitors for the first tournament of the year, Chiawana was still able to capture the first place trophy for small teams at the Pasco High School Tournament. Congress Captain Linh Truong led the team with a first place in Open Informative Speaking, second in Open Congressional Debate, and second in Open Program Oral Interpretation. Debate Captain Saige Johnson followed with second place in Big Questions Debate (with partner Amy Walker) and third in Open Expository Speaking and Open Editorial Commentary. We also have some very enthusiastic and talented novices. Amy Walker took first place in both Novice Editorial Commentary and Novice Humorous Interpretation. Alison Pettey was first place in Novice Tall Tales, and Briana Castro took first with a perfect score in Novice Dramatic Interpretation.
