2018-19 Tournament 3: Chiawana, December 1

Image
It's always great to host a tournament. Even though we come early to set up, we still get to sleep later than when we travel. My assistant coach/daughter, Sara, and I both logged over 16,000 steps as we hosted 15 schools, over 100 students, and 50 coaches and judges. As always, people love being at Chiawana. Even with team members out with illness, Chiawana had a great tournament, picking up all three team awards: Speech Sweepstakes, Debate Sweepstakes,  and Large Team Sweepstakes. Individual finishes are as follows: Big Questions Debate: Saige Johnson and Amy Walker, 2nd Novice Congressional Debate: Briana Castro, 1st; Victor Soriano, 3rd, Top Presiding Officer Open Congressional Debate: Linh Truong, 1st Novice Dramatic Interpretation: Briana Castro, 1st (perfect score) Novice Editorial Commentary: Amy Walker, 1st (perfect score); Alison Pettey, 3rd Novice Informative Speaking: Amy Walker, 1st Novice Humorous Interpretation: Amy Walker and Alison Pettey, unbrea

With only eight competitors for the first tournament of the year, Chiawana was still able to capture the first place trophy for small teams at the Pasco High School Tournament. Congress Captain Linh Truong led the team with a first place in Open Informative Speaking, second in Open Congressional Debate, and second in Open Program Oral Interpretation. Debate Captain Saige Johnson followed with second place in Big Questions Debate (with partner Amy Walker) and third in Open Expository Speaking and Open Editorial Commentary. We also have some very enthusiastic and talented novices. Amy Walker took first place in both Novice Editorial Commentary and Novice Humorous Interpretation. Alison Pettey was first place in Novice Tall Tales, and Briana Castro took first with a perfect score in Novice Dramatic Interpretation. Four students—Conner Mahaffey, Ulises Bruno, Victor Soriano, and Alison Pettey—competed in their first ever Congressional Debate. I was parliamentarian in that ch

National Qualifier-Linh Truong

Linh Truong   Team Member since 2017   2018 National qualifier in Lincoln-Douglas Debate   Outstanding  Distinction rank  with National Speech and Debate Organization   Why did you join Speech and Debate?    It seemed like a great opportunity for another extracurricular activity and some of my friends did it (Baylee and Eric). I stayed because I love all the people and enjoy doing it.  What  is  your favorite Speech and Debate memory?    There are a few. I loved beating Q at the ninja game at Regionals. When I got 1st in Novice Impromptu it made me proud (and Baylee). I really loved getting to debate syrup sandwiches that one time. What is the hardest part of Speech and Debate?    I don't mind losing, but I do find it hard to get the physical energy to keep going all day.  What do you do for fun?    Speech and Debate, and reading, listening to music, being with my friends and family. Oh, and I love taking pictures. I have a po
