Inland Empire National Qualifying Tournament

Ten students qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association tournament in Fort Lauderdale June 17-22 and a few more are alternates!

We won sweepstakes awards in Speech, Debate, and Overall.

Qualifiers are:
Big Questions Debate: Trevor Schmitt, Qualifier; Jacob Talsmat, Alternate
Dramatic Interpretation: Monica Winn, Qualifier; Yerushulaim Solano (PHS), Qualifier; Nathaly Mendoza, Alternate
Duo Interpretation: Caleb Hernandez and Ford Powers, Qualifiers (Caleb's second trip to Nationals); Eric Harrod and Malene Garcia, Alternates (going to nationals in their individual events)
Humorous Interpretation: Ford Powers, Qualifier (going in Duo); Linda Corona, Qualifier;
Audra Totten, Alternate (going in Informative); Harrison Higgins, Alternate
Informative Speaking: Audra Totten, Qualifier; Malene Garcia, Qualifier
Lincoln Douglas Debate: Linh Truong, Qualifier
Original Oratory: Eric Harrod, Qualifier; Saige Johnson, Alternate
Program Oral Interpretation: Isaiah Moore (second trip to Nationals), Qualifier; Monica Winn, Qualifier (going in Dramatic Interp); Quirino Quiroga, Alternate
International Extemporaneous Speaking: Jacob Talsmat, Alternate

Students are only allowed to qualify in one event, but this is the first time we have had students (Ford and Monica) technically qualify in both of their events.

If an award exists, I believe in nominating someone for it--which I did! Congratulations to Malene Garcia on being named District Student of the Year. CHS Graduate/Volunteer judge Nick Higgins was named District Volunteer of the Year. CHS Graduate Jared Costanzo was named District Alumnus of the Year. Principal John Wallwork is our Inland Empire District Principal of the Year.


We have State Speech two weeks from today, debate the week after, and then the fundraising will begin!

With only eight competitors for the first tournament of the year, Chiawana was still able to capture the first place trophy for small teams at the Pasco High School Tournament. Congress Captain Linh Truong led the team with a first place in Open Informative Speaking, second in Open Congressional Debate, and second in Open Program Oral Interpretation. Debate Captain Saige Johnson followed with second place in Big Questions Debate (with partner Amy Walker) and third in Open Expository Speaking and Open Editorial Commentary. We also have some very enthusiastic and talented novices. Amy Walker took first place in both Novice Editorial Commentary and Novice Humorous Interpretation. Alison Pettey was first place in Novice Tall Tales, and Briana Castro took first with a perfect score in Novice Dramatic Interpretation. Othello District 5/6 Tournament

Those of us who have been around for a little while remember the great Seattle Mariners years in the mid-‘90s and announcer Dave Niehaus’ catchprase, “My, oh my!” That’s exactly how I feel about the Speech and Debate team’s achievements in Mid-Columbia/Yakima Valley competition on Saturday, January 20, at Othello High School. We are at the point in the season where things are beginning to solidify for Regionals in Yakima on February 16 and 17 and National Qualifiers at Chiawana the following week. It’s the last chance to try out new material, and several of our students did just that. Because there are no divisions between novice and varsity at regionals or state, the novices are honing their speeches and preparing to face competition they have not yet encountered. And my, oh my, did they succeed.
